Member Spotlight: UNESCO-Supported Open Access Book on AI and Education

We love highlighting the impactful work of our members! ATEE member Renato Brito (Brazil), along with co-authors Rafael Parente and Maria Cristina Mesquita, recently reached out to share a major new publication that is highly relevant to our network.

Their book, titled The Amplified Teacher: Reimagining the Teacher’s Role in the Age of AI, was published with the official support of UNESCO and offers a sensitive, thought-provoking invitation to rethink the role of the educator in times of artificial intelligence.

Key Highlights:

  • Human-Centered AI: Rather than treating AI as a threat or a magic solution, the authors argue that AI can augment, or amplify, the teacher's role, provided the human remains at the center of educational practice.
  • A Global Perspective: The book explores diverse educational experiences across different regions, from Kenya to India, and Brazil to South Korea, proving that technology must always engage in dialogue with local culture.
  • Fully Open Access: The digital version is completely free to read, download, and share across your institutions in both English and Portuguese.

We highly encourage you to dive into this timely resource and share it within your academic circles!

Digitising Academic Catalogues for Enhanced Mobility (DACEM)

Organized by the Erasmus Student Network (ESN)  Registration Deadline: 3rd June 2026

Academic catalogues are much more than static lists of course information, they are vital tools for transparency, seamless student mobility, and institutional cooperation across Europe.

ESN is wrapping up the DACEM project (Digitising Academic Catalogues for Enhanced Mobility) and invite the ATEE community to their final events this June. This initiative is highly relevant for members working on higher education policy, digitalization, institutional partnerships, and teacher mobility formats (such as Blended Intensive Programmes).

The final event is split into two parts:

1. Online Webinar: Recommendations & Quality Link

  •  Date & Time: 11th June 2026 | 10:30–12:00 CEST
  • Focus: An introduction to the project’s core recommendations and a deep dive into connecting quality data across European higher education.

2. In-Person Conference: Moving Mobility Forward

  •  Date & Time: 17th June 2026 | 09:30–17:00 CEST
  • Location: University Foundation, Rue d’Egmont 11, 1000 Brussels
  • Focus: This practical session moves beyond the technical side to look at how digital catalogues interact with frameworks like Erasmus Without Paper, ECTS, and Inter-Institutional Agreements. The afternoon will tackle future needs, including the role of catalogues in European University Alliances, joint programmes, and teacher mobility.

If your institution is currently navigating the digital shift in European mobility, this is an excellent opportunity to help shape the user-friendly, interoperable systems of tomorrow.

OECD Webinar on Breaking the Cycle of Skills Inequality

Date & Time: 11th June 2026 | 17:00 CEST (Online)

Family background remains one of the strongest drivers of skills differences across the globe. According to data from the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development), adults with tertiary-educated parents consistently score higher in literacy, numeracy, and adaptive problem-solving than their peers from less advantaged backgrounds.

To explore how policy and teacher education can intervene, the OECD is hosting an upcoming webinar to examine the lifecycle of these skills gaps. Research shows these disparities take shape early in childhood, narrow somewhat during compulsory schooling, but widen significantly again in adulthood.

Drawing on international evidence and practical policy examples, this session will showcase what works to break the cycle of inherited disadvantage in skills development.

This webinar is an excellent resource for teacher educators, researchers, and policymakers focused on educational equity and social mobility.

Defending Classrooms Against the Spread of Disinformation

Combating digital misinformation requires more than just better media literacy, it demands a fundamental shift in how we approach learning.

In their recent piece for Media & Learning, titled “Immunising the next generation: How teachers can build student resilience against disinformation,” researchers Elina Kuokkanen and Annika Niesen investigate how modern schooling can serve as a "cognitive shield" within our crowded digital landscape.

Rather than simply playing catch-up with fake news after it goes viral, the authors emphasize a proactive approach. They demonstrate how educators can equip students with the critical habits and analytical tools necessary to spot, challenge, and withstand online manipulation before it takes root.

Ultimately, protecting students from digital deception isn't achieved through a single lesson; it is an ongoing, evolving educational journey.

Ethical AI & Open Data in Research Webinar

Organized by the Data Europa Academy
Date & Time: 12th June 2026 | 10:00–11:30 CEST (Online)

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape the landscape of higher education and academic research, navigating the ethics of digital information has never been more critical. Our partners at the Data Europa Academy are hosting the second episode of their three-part webinar series: "Open data, academia, and ethics."

This upcoming session dives straight into the opportunities and challenges of using synthetic and AI-generated data in research. While these technologies offer brilliant solutions for tackling data scarcity and protecting privacy, they also introduce significant risks regarding bias, transparency, and potential misuse.

During the webinar, a panel of leading researchers will:

  • Demystify Synthetic Data: Explain exactly how it is created and applied in real-world research.
  • Weigh the Benefits: Explore how it can be leveraged for effective, data-driven decision-making.
  • Identify the Risks: Discuss methods for distinguishing authentic data from synthetic data.
  • Provide Best Practices: Share actionable strategies to ensure responsible, ethical, and trustworthy data use.

Whether you are a researcher, a teacher educator guiding doctoral students, or a policymaker navigating the fast-evolving landscape of AI, this session will provide vital insights for your practice.
