Health, environment and sustainability

This R&D Community is an interdisciplinary forum. We investigate and discuss the dynamic relationship between health, environmental and sustainability education.

Our group regularly contributes to the development of international and national research projects, be it on health education, health promotion, environmental education, sustainability education or education for sustainable development.

Our theories, research and practices are primarily connected to health and sustainable learner empowerment, but also to pedagogical practices, community partnerships, teacher training, (self) supervision and professional development, curriculum development and educational policies on environmental and sustainability education.

Main themes

  • Promoting health and environmental sustainability amongst teacher educators, teachers, school principals and students.

  • Share, disseminate and promote the development and impact of relevant research in order to act as positive change catalysers of national and international policies, as well as educational practices.

  • Advocating that health can benefit from teacher educators and professional teacher development, as well as from the whole-school health and green economy promotion initiatives which put education and health at the core of sustainable development.

  • Emphasizes the links between economic, social and environmental sustainability and, more specifically, the links between health and social sustainability on one hand, and environmental sustainability and human health on the other hand.

  • Encourages researchers, teacher educators and teachers of health, environmental and sustainability education to examine the potential of- and barriers to- sustainable school-community partnerships, which aim at health and environment improvement through education.
